Responding to a February 1937 request from the military for a fast, powerful, and long-range fighter, the P-38 Lightning became a highly successful design with 10,000 units produced and training numerous US ace pilots. Although its design continuously evolved after its maiden flight in 1939, the increase in engine power eventually overwhelmed the P-38's cooling system, limiting its output to 1,250hp at higher altitudes. The solution to this issue arrived in August 1943 with the P-38J, which relocated the intercoolers from the wing leading edges to the underside of the engines. This improved cooling allowed for the use of the full 1,425hp even at high altitudes, and the extra space on the leading edges was utilized for auxiliary fuel tanks, increasing the fighter's range.
