During World War II, 175 Fletcher-class destroyers were constructed for the U.S. Navy, serving as the primary destroyers for both the Pacific and Atlantic fleets. One notable ship among these was the USS Cushing (DD-797), commissioned in 1944. With added anti-aircraft weaponry and a square bridge for improved visibility, she was an upgraded late-production vessel. Alongside her five 12.7cm guns and quintuple 533mm torpedo launcher, she also carried five twin 40mm cannons and seven single 20mm cannons. Throughout her time in combat, she participated in significant events such as the attacks on Taiwan and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. She even sailed into Tokyo Bay with the USS Missouri and bore witness to the signing of the surrender documents at the end of the war.
